The car on screen is the celebrated Fiat 131 Abarth, winner of the 1980 Monte Carlo Rally with German pairing Walter Röhrl and Christian Geistdörfer. Developed by Abarth for Fiat, the 131 Abarth was designed for Group 4 rallying, turning an ordinary family saloon into a formidable racing machine.
After two world titles in 1977 and 1978, Fiat aimed to reclaim the championship from rivals like the Ford Escort. Röhrl delivered, dominating the 1980 Monte Carlo Rally (ahead of notable contenders such as Bernard Darniche), leading the event by over ten minutes at the finish—a true masterclass on snow and tarmac.
Due to strikes at the Fiat factory, the car nearly missed the 1980 Sanremo Rally, only making the start line with no official livery to avoid union blockades—Röhrl won anyway! At Monte Carlo, his snow-driving finesse and ability to keep his rivals at bay remain legendary.
