Kess — KE43000420 | Alfa Romeo 1900 CSS Coupé Ghia-Aigle "Lugano" (1957)
Unveiled at the 1957 Geneva Motor Show, this one-off Grand Touring coupe was created by Carrosserie Ghia-Aigle, the bespoke Swiss coachbuilding firm originally established in association with Ghia of Turin. Penned by renowned stylist Giovanni Michelotti, the "Lugano" coupe was constructed on the high-performance factory short-wheelbase chassis of the Alfa Romeo 1900 C Super Sprint (CSS). It is distinguished by clean ponton-style surfacing, an elongated profile, a low-slung oval front intake framing a minimalist Alfa Romeo shield, and delicate panoramic greenhouse glass, epitomizing the elegance of mid-century Swiss craftsmanship.
Beneath its hand-formed aluminum hood sits Alfa Romeo’s celebrated 1,975 cc twin-cam (Bialbero) inline-four engine from the 1900 Super Sprint. Fed by twin dual-choke Solex carburetors, it produces 115 horsepower at 5,500 rpm. Channeled to the rear wheels via a floor-shifted 5-speed manual gearbox, the lightweight coachbuilt special delivered refined handling and a claimed top speed close to 190 km/h (118 mph), remaining one of the most distinctive bespoke creations built on the 1900 platform.
