The Ford J, or J-Car, was an experimental prototype developed by Ford in 1966 as part of the GT40 program. The goal was to create a lighter and faster replacement for the GT40 Mk II, featuring an innovative aluminum honeycomb chassis and a streamlined body. It used a 7-liter V8 engine and a 2-speed automatic transmission, weighing about 940 kg.
The J-Car chassis was first tested at Riverside in August 1966 by Ken Miles. Sadly, during a test session, aerodynamic instability caused a fatal accident resulting in the death of Ken Miles. After this tragedy, Ford completely redesigned the car, leading to the successful GT40 Mk IV that triumphed in 1967.
