At the 1988 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, Senna started from pole position but stalled on the grid, dropping well down the order before rolling his McLaren forward and restarting on the downhill section. He then produced a remarkable comeback in mixed conditions, slicing through the field and closing rapidly on his team‑mate and title rival Alain Prost.
Using backmarker traffic and Prost’s gearbox issues to his advantage, Senna seized the lead mid‑race, set a series of very fast laps, and pulled clear to win by several seconds, securing his first Formula One World Drivers’ Championship. This TRUESCALE 1/43 model faithfully represents the McLaren MP4/4 Honda no. 12 as it appeared when winning the 1988 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka.
