At the 1979 Monaco Grand Prix, John Watson drove the McLaren M28 no.7 powered by the Ford Cosworth DFV V8, qualifying only 14th on the grid because the car was overweight and not as effective as rival ground‑effect machines. In a race of heavy attrition around the tight Monaco streets he climbed steadily through the field to finish in a strong 4th place, giving McLaren a valuable result in spite of the M28’s shortcomings.
