The Mazda RX-7 #77 at the 1979 24 Hours of Daytona was the second factory‑backed GTU car, driven by Americans Walt Bohren, Jim Downing and Roger Mandeville, and finished in the same striking white-and-red/orange striped livery. Running a slightly lower rev limit than the “hare” #7, it enjoyed an almost trouble‑free race, at one stage leading GTU overnight before easing its pace late on and securing 2nd in GTU and 6th overall behind the sister car.
