LookSmart — LSRC203 | Ferrari 512 M No. 11 (North American Racing Team / NART — 24 Hours of Le Mans 1971)
The ultimate, highly refined evolution of the 512 S, the Ferrari 512 M ("Modificata") featured dramatically restyled, low-drag aerodynamic bodywork, reduced overall weight, and a high-revving 5.0-liter V12 engine producing 610 horsepower, specifically engineered to challenge the Porsche 917s.
Entered by Luigi Chinetti's North American Racing Team (NART) under car #11 featuring its iconic blue, red, and white-striped livery, this 512 M was shared by American star Mark Donohue and British driver David Hobbs. After a rapid opening stint fighting among the leaders, severe mechanical troubles set the team back, ultimately leaving them unclassified / retired at the end of 24 hours due to insufficient distance completed.
