LookSmart — LSLM177 | Ferrari 512 S No. 8 (SpA Ferrari SEFAC — 24 Hours of Le Mans 1970)
Developed to challenge the dominant Porsche 917s in Group 5 racing, the Ferrari 512 S featured a spaceframe chassis with aluminum skin, powered by a roaring 5.0-liter V12 engine producing 550 horsepower. Configured in short-tail (Cuda) trim, it offered sharp maneuverability along with the iconic exhaust note of 1970s Maranello prototypes.
Entered as an official factory works car by SpA Ferrari SEFAC carrying No. #8, it was shared by Swiss legend Clay Regazzoni alongside Italian ace Arturo Merzario. Running strongly in the opening hours, their effort came to a chaotic end on lap 38 when torrential rain and poor visibility triggered a dramatic multi-car pileup involving several factory Ferraris (including Reine Wisell's No. 7 and Mike Parkes's No. 6), forcing an early retirement.
