LookSmart — LSLM173 | Ferrari 512 S No. 5 (SpA Ferrari SEFAC — 24 Hours of Le Mans 1970)
Created to challenge Porsche's dominance in Group 5 sports car racing, the Ferrari 512 S paired an aluminum-reinforced spaceframe chassis with a high-revving 5.0-liter V12 engine producing 550 horsepower. Configured in short-tail (Cuda) specification, it was built to provide maximum agility through the tighter sections of Circuit de la Sarthe.
Entered as a lead factory works car by SpA Ferrari SEFAC under No. #5, it was shared by Belgian star Jacky Ickx and Swiss/British driver Peter Schetty. Starting from 5th on the grid, Ickx mounted a fierce charge through increasingly treacherous weather conditions. While battling for top positions during the night, a tragic brake-related crash at the Dunlop Chicane claimed the life of a track marshal and forced the car's retirement after 142 laps.
