LookSmart — LSLM204 | Ferrari 512 M No. 12 (North American Racing Team / NART — 3rd 24 Hours of Le Mans 1971)
The ultimate evolution of the 512 S, the Ferrari 512 M ("Modificata") featured a significantly sharper, low-drag aerodynamic bodywork, a reduced overall weight, and a revised 5.0-liter V12 engine producing 610 horsepower. Built to counter the dominance of the Porsche 917, it remains one of the most iconic sports prototypes of the 1970s.
Entered by the renowned North American Racing Team (NART) under car #12, this 512 M sported the team's distinctive blue-and-white accents. Shared by American driver Sam Posey and Frenchman Tony Adamowicz, the pair drove a steady and heroic race across 24 exhausting hours around Circuit de la Sarthe to secure a magnificent 3rd place overall, taking a memorable podium finish at Le Mans.
