Spark — S8157 | MG Metro 6R4 No. 10 (Austin Rover WRT — 3rd Lombard RAC Rally 1985)
One of the most distinctive and beloved machines of the Group B era, the MG Metro 6R4 was developed by Austin Rover Motorsport in partnership with Williams Grand Prix Engineering. Eschewing the turbochargers favored by its competitors, it was powered by a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter 24-valve V6 (the bespoke V64V engine) derived from the Rover V8, mid-mounted to produce over 410 horsepower and an unmistakable soundtrack, paired with permanent four-wheel drive and a short wheelbase.
Carrying start number #10 for the car's official World Rally Championship (WRC) debut, this factory-backed machine was driven by British rally hero Tony Pond, navigated by co-driver Rob Arthur. Mastering treacherous, muddy forest tracks across England, Scotland, and Wales, Pond delivered an inspired drive to record a legendary debut podium for the British contender, finishing in 3rd place overall right behind the debutant Lancia Delta S4s.
