Introduced in mid-1975 as a 1976 model, the Cadillac Seville represented a monumental paradigm shift for General Motors' flagship luxury brand. Engineered to counter the surging popularity of European premium sedans (notably the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series) in the wake of the 1973 oil crisis, the Seville overturned Detroit's "bigger is better" philosophy: it was the smallest car in the Cadillac portfolio, yet carried the highest base price. Masterminded under design chief Bill Mitchell, its influential "sheer look" styling showcased crisp angular surfaces, upright proportions, a formal vinyl-padded roofline, and an understated egg-crate chrome grille, establishing a clean design template that defined American luxury cars for the next decade.

Built upon GM’s specially engineered K-body architecture—incorporating rubber and Teflon-isolated subframes to eliminate road noise and harshness—the Seville was powered by an Oldsmobile-sourced 350 ci (5.7-liter) V8 engine. Setting an industry milestone, it came standard with a Bendix electronic multipoint fuel-injection system (EFI) governed by an onboard electronic control unit—a pioneering first for a standard-production American automobile. The V8 produced 180 net horsepower at 4,400 rpm and 275 lb-ft (373 Nm) of torque.
