LookSmart — LSLM180 | Ferrari 512 S No. 6 (SpA Ferrari SEFAC — 24 Hours of Le Mans 1970)
Engineered to comply with Group 5 sports car regulations requiring a 25-unit production run, the Ferrari 512 S was powered by a glorious 5.0-liter V12 engine producing 550 horsepower. With its muscular curves, low-slung profile, and intoxicating exhaust note, it represented Maranello's official weapon to challenge Porsche's formidable 917.
Entered as a works factory car by SpA Ferrari SEFAC wearing No. #6, this short-tail (Cuda) 512 S was shared by Italian ace Ignazio Giunti and Sicilian legend Nino Vaccarella. Running strong in the early stages of a grueling, rain-soaked race, their effort was abruptly ended on lap 38 after being caught up in a multi-car collision involving several works Ferraris, forcing their retirement.
