The Maserati Tipo 61 “Birdcage” #24, entered by the American Camoradi team and driven by Masten Gregory and Chuck Daigh, competed in the 1960 24 Hours of Le Mans. Exceptionally fast early in the race — with Gregory taking the lead and passing over twenty cars at the start — the Maserati was forced to retire around midnight due to engine failure, after climbing back up to 20th place following ignition trouble. Known for its innovative tubular chassis and nimble handling, this car remains famous despite its fragile reliability.
