The legendary Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.8 AMG, nicknamed “Rote Sau” (the Red Pig) for its powerful look and color, was entrusted to Hans Heyer for the official test drive at the 1972 Le Mans 24 Hours pre-race. Having already become famous with a 2nd place finish and class victory at the 1971 Spa 24 Hours, this impressive saloon did not take the official race start at Le Mans but left a lasting impression during the preliminary trials. The test confirmed AMG’s exceptional engineering: 6.8-liter V8 engine with 428 hp, top speed of 265 km/h, and unexpected reliability for a touring saloon.
